When their class ended, Zheng Jiajia and Qiao Hui headed to another building for their next class. However, they happened to run into Lu Ting and Xia Ran in front of the school cafe.

 Lu Ting was still dressed like a pure white flower. Today, she wore a white cotton dress that was dotted with a few pure and flawless little Jasmines.

 Her long black hair was affixed with a red bow headband. She was wearing nude silk stockings underneath her dress, which accented her long and slender legs.

 It was already March, but the weather hasn’t completely warmed up. So when a gust of wind happened to pass by, it still carried the coolness of early Spring.

 Lu Ting looked quite delicate and very fragile. However, she seemed to have a temperament of ‘I see pity’.

 Zheng Jiajia couldn’t help but murmur the word “green tea” in a low voice.

Upon seeing Qiao Hui, Lu Ting stretched out her arm and affectionately held Xia Ran’s. Her eyes were filled with admiration as she spoke in a soft and endearing voice, “You’re so good but she still broke up with you… Don’t be sad, she’s the unlucky one anyway.”

 Though she voiced this out softly, it was still heard by everyone nearby.

 Xia Ran remained quiet. Because of what happened these past few days, he became quite gaunt-looking. Nevertheless, considering his natural looks, he was still as handsome as ever. 

 Qiao Hui didn’t react to Lu Ting’s provocation. However, Zheng Jiajia felt disgusted and couldn’t listen to her anymore. Robbing another person’s boyfriend and still made it look like Qiao Hui was the one responsible for the nonsensical breakup… Was she trying to be a white lotus?

 Currently, Qiao Hui’s heart was as calm as always. She realized that what Zheng Jiajia said before was right, “You don’t have to feel sorry for anyone who was stolen from you.” Her breakup with Xia Ran could be regarded as a dodged bullet.

 She knew very well that Lu Ting has always been jealous of her. This was why she deliberately stole her boyfriend twice. Just so the latter could show her charm to everyone.

 Nevertheless… Why was Lu Ting jealous of her? Maybe because she is the young lady of the Qiao family? But, if she was so jealous, then why didn’t she openly tell Qiao Guoqiang about this? It was mainly because she’s a mouse that can’t be seen ¹[TL Note- a mouse that can’t be seen, here it is mentioned because a mouse is afraid of the light, the author meant that LT is a mouse who is afraid of disclosing her identity of being an illegitimate daughter, and Qiao Hui being the legitimate daughter], and that she also knew that if she insisted on being recognized, she would be abandoned with her mother at any time. 

 If one day, Qiao Guoqiang gets tired of both mother and daughter, they may not even get a living allowance. If that time ever came, their daily lives will be affected.

 As long as Lu Ting didn’t have the surname same as Qiao Hui, then the latter would always be one step ahead of her.  Knowing about this very fact made Lu Ting green with envy.

 So why would she, Qiao Hui, get angry at her?

 After Lu Ting blinked her pair of fawn eyes² [TL Note- Fawn Eyes mean deer-like eyes.], she shook Xia Ran’s arms while acting playful. “Brother Ran, not only are we a real couple, but we’ll also play the same role in《I like you so much》³[TL Note- I like you so much, is the drama Qiao Hui and Zheng Jiajia talked about in prev ch. (Ch-6) that LT got after pleading to Father Qiao.].” 

This sentence not only showed her affection but also emphasized her higher status.

By saying this, she was also telling others that she and Xia Ran would soon be entering the entertainment industry. Although everyone was a student of the Beicheng Film Academy, some students, even after graduation, would only get to play background roles.

 After all, not everyone could get the role of second female lead or third male lead⁴ [TL Note- second female lead and the third male lead is specifically mentioned because these are the roles LT and XR got] in their lifetime. 

 Although Lu Ting was still only in her junior year, she could already play such an important role. How could she resist showing off?

 Qiao Hui glanced at Xia Ran and sighed silently. She hoped that he got what he wanted.

 After Qiao Hui and Zheng Jiajia left, Lu Ting glanced at Xia Ran and asked in a delicate tone, “Brother Ran, do you still think about her?”

 Xia Ran lowered his eyes and balled his left hand behind him into a fist. The blue veins on the back of his hand bulged, and it was notably evident if anyone saw it. However, he covered the surging emotions in his eyes as he replied in a calm and indifferent tone, “Of course not.”

After hearing this, Lu Ting further pressed herself against him lovingly. She leaned her head against his chest and coquettishly said, “Huh, this is much better.”

⁵Past Story [In the beginning, Lu Ting deliberately approached Xia Ran for the sake of annoying Qiao Hui. However, as she spent more time with him, she realized that she surprisingly started liking this man. Honestly, who wouldn’t like someone so beautiful to the point of exquisiteness? She was filled with joy just by seeing him every day.

 Xia Ran ignored her pursuit. Since at that time, Qiao Hui was the only woman in his mind.

 Fortunately, the turnaround came soon. When something happened to his family and knowing that he needed a large amount of working capital, Lu Ting took the initiative and went to his place and told him she had money, a lot of it. As long as he was willing to betray Qiao Hui and stay with her, she would help his family through this difficult time. To address credibility, she called Qiao Guoqiang in front of Xia Ran and addressed the other party as ‘Father’.

 Naturally, Xia Ran accepted it.

After the deal was made, she gave Xia Ran a large stash of money for their emergency, which solved his urgent needs. She had also helped him win the role of being the third male lead in the idol drama.

 As long as he could properly seize this opportunity, he was destined to soar into the sky with his good looks. Sooner or later, he would become a renowned actor, and when that day comes, she would be that very actor’s girlfriend. In the future, she would eventually become his wife and will always stand beside him.

 With this bright and ideal future ahead, Lu Ting smiled triumphantly.] ⁶End

From a young age, Lu Ting knew that she needed to strive to earn the things she wanted. Sometimes, she wouldn’t mind using deplorable means to make her life better. The process wasn’t important. What truly mattered was the result.

 Zheng Jiajia grabbed Qiao Hui’s arm and told her, “Qiao Qiao, why don’t you stay with me tonight? It’s awfully boring being alone in my room.”

⁸Past Reference [Qiao Hui knew that she was Zheng Jiajia’s only friend. It wasn’t because Zheng Jiajia had a bad personality or was difficult to get along with. It was because, in the first two years of college, Zheng Jiajia only had her ex-boyfriend in her heart. Back then, she didn’t have any intentions of befriending anyone. She would go back to the dormitory late every night and leave early the next morning. Although everyone lived in the same dormitory, their interactions were close to zero. It was difficult for everyone to stumble upon each other and sometimes, they would only share a few pleasantries. Frankly, everyone may live in the same dormitory but their relation to each other is close to a stranger.

Consequently, when Zheng Jiajia broke up with her ex-boyfriend two years later, she was left alone because of her indifference towards other people. During this wretched moment of hers, only Qiao Hui was there for her.] ⁹ End

 After listening to her friend’s invitation, Qiao Hui hesitated before finally agreeing.

 She wasn’t the type of person who forgets her friends and only remembers them when she needs them. Zheng Jiajia has already asked her this request so many times, she couldn’t refuse anymore. There was another thing to take note of, Zheng Jiajia’s previous failed relationship also taught her a lesson.

 She can like a man without reservation, but she can’t give up everything for him. Even if she was married, she would still need her own social life and friends. Xu Yiyang was good, but she couldn’t sacrifice her friends because of him.

 When Qiao Hui agreed, Zheng Jiajia did a V sign ¹⁰ [TL Note- In China, South Korea, and Taiwan, the V sign is a popular pose in photographs. It is used in both casual and formal settings. For the most part in these countries, the gesture is severed from its previous meanings as a peace sign or as an insult; for most the meaning of the sign is “victory” or “yeah”, implying a feeling of happiness. It is used in both directions (palm facing the signer and palm facing forward).

The pose is gaining significant popularity in South Korea due to the common usage amongst Kpop idols and young people – especially in selfies. V signing is commonly linked with aegyo, a popular trend in Korea meaning “acting cutely”. For more info click here]

 Qiao Hui feared that Zheng Jiajia would misunderstand her intentions, so she hurriedly added, “Just one night, okay?”

 “One night is fine. It’s better than nothing.”
