Chapter 20.1
You and Cheng Jingbo…
💖
Bo Ziren was called back to school on her second week of holiday. Fu He had accepted an invitation from Science Weekly and had taken the magazine staff to visit the school’s research room to exchange information. He also decided to recommend a student to participate in a small interview discussing the young people of their generation, and after a bit of thought, he’d settled on that student being Bo Ziren.
“I’ve chosen you to give you a chance to communicate with the outside world,” he said to her as they sat in his office. Fu He poured out the tea in his glass and replaced it with fresh tea.
“When they come, cooperate as much as possible. You can talk about your life at school and your views on the future. They should also be young, so there shouldn’t be any trouble of a generation gap between you.”
Bo Ziren nodded from her seat on the sofa.
“Little Bo, there should be no problem.”
Bo Ziren ignored the sudden tension she felt and instead agreed.
“I will do my best.”
Fu He smiled, his eyes filling with relief.
Ten minutes later, three staff members of Science Weekly arrived. Two of them were older than Bo Ziren, and the third was a lady who seemed to be Bo Ziren’s age. She wore a furry hat that obscured her face, but she took it off before shaking hands with Fu He. As she looked about the office, her eyes met with Bo Ziren’s, and they both startled in surprise.
Bo Ziren was looking at Lu Ning from the hospital. It was clear Lu Ning had recognized her as well, as she restrained her smile and all too casually turned away.
The other two senior staff members followed Fu He as he led them away to visit the research room. Before leaving, they instructed Lu Ning on carefully completing the interview. Lu Ning was now less than pleased with her task, but it was too late to refuse it.
As the door closed behind them, the office grew deathly silent, before Lu Ning calmly took a pen and notebook out of her bag, and faced Bo Ziren.
“Let’s start straight away. I’ve prepared a few questions beforehand. Please help me in answering them.”
“Oh.”
Bo Ziren nodded, not knowing what else to say.
After two questions, Lu Ning stopped and twirled her pen between her fingers.
“You’re answering too simply, and all you’re giving me are superficial answers. Can you tell us more about your own thoughts? Give a more creative point of view.”
Bo Ziren dropped her gaze. For some reason, she felt out of sorts today and didn’t feel like saying anything, especially to Lu Ning.
“What happened to you?”
“Oh.”
“Oh, what? I’m asking you a question.”
Lu Ning was thoroughly annoyed and felt that her interviewee was choosing not to cooperate.
“I don’t have a new point of view because I’m still studying. I have yet to understand many new concepts. I’m sorry. Can we continue to the next question?” Bo Ziren asked, lowering her head slightly.
“Do you usually talk with your head down? It seems rude,” said Lu Ning, now moving from annoyance to irritation. The tip of her pen made two strokes on her notebook.
Bo Ziren raised her head.
“What’s the next question?”
“Let’s solve this problem first.”
“I have nothing more to add to this.”
“Give me some more.”
“I don’t have anything more to give.”
Lu Ning felt she was going crazy.
“How can you not have a professional vocabulary?”
“I’ve said everything I can. I really don’t have anything more to offer. I’m not very good at saying subjective things.”
Lu Ning frowned.
“Then how do you communicate with Cheng Jingbo?”
Bo Ziren was taken aback. She hadn’t expected the topic of Cheng Jingbo to come up.
“It doesn’t matter if you have a prejudice against me or not. We need to do our best and create cooperation between us. If the interview goes smoothly, you can have positive news for your mentor. However, if you don’t want to cooperate with me and keep using these simple words, then this interview will be very shallow and empty.”
Lu Ning’s attitude had turned solemn.
“Do you understand?”
Bo Ziren was silent for a bit, before speaking.
“I wasn’t speaking to you in a perfunctory manner.”
Lu Ning stared at this beautiful girl before her, and couldn’t help but cry out in her heart. Cheng Jingbo, that hypocrite, claimed he didn’t like beautiful women and that he focused on communicating on a spiritual level, yet in the end, he had picked a beautiful woman as his girlfriend. Men were indeed very hypocritical.
A long minute passed before Lu Ning relented.
“Alright, I was too emotional. I’m sorry. Let’s continue. Even if it’s for Cheng Jingbo’s sake, please help me finish this interview.”
“You and Cheng Jingbo…”
Lu Ning cut her off before she could continue.
“My uncle and his father are old friends. They’re very close, but I’m not so familiar with him. I’ve met him three times since I was a little girl, and we’ve had less than five opportunities to talk to each other. There, do you feel relieved now? Can we continue?”
Bo Ziren hadn’t expected her to be so direct and was left speechless. No matter what though, Bo Ziren felt that Lu Ning would always be a friend of Cheng Jingbo. Regardless of her feelings, she should do her best to cooperate and complete her job, not just for Cheng Jingbo’s sake, but for Fu He’s as well.
For the next hour or so, Bo Ziren answered every question to her best ability, including her growth experience, family environment, education, hobbies, etc. She tried to give answers that were as real and as spontaneous as possible.
After it was over, Lu Ning tidied up her things and remarked sourly, “What do you like about Cheng Jingbo anyway? He’s just a bit good-looking, and a bit knowledgeable. The rest of him is plain and boring.”
“No, he’s a very good person, and he’s not boring at all.”
This sentence made Lu Ning’s heart grow hard. The treasure she had first taken a fancy to had always been out of reach, and when she tried to chase after it, it had fallen into someone else’s hand in what seemed like the blink of an eye. The funny thing was that she had to keep pretending like she didn’t care.
Picking up her bag, she shook her head and left, humming tunelessly as she walked out the door.
