Chapter 22.1
Cheng Jingbo, You Crazy Bastard
💖
In the end, it turned out to be more serious than Xue Ling had imagined. Cheng Jingbo called Lu Ning after he’d finished reading the interview she’d emailed him. He asked her to delete the details about Bo Ziren’s life, causing Lu Ning to be displeased. She felt she was professional enough to not have to take anyone’s advice on her writing. However, she had not expected the usually calm Cheng Jingbo to show so much persistence in the matter. He adamantly said that if she did not modify it, he would contact her supervisor directly to help solve the issue. Her supervisor happened to be her great uncle.
After he hung up, Lu Ning felt so angry she began to tremble. She couldn’t understand what she had done wrong. Not only was her piece factual, but the information had been voluntarily given to her by the interviewee. Did Cheng Jingbo not value the truth? Her rage made her want to smash her computer. She breathed in deeply, in an attempt to suppress her anger, before pulling up the document and reading through the second half of the interview.
The loneliness in her body is very heavy. This can clearly be felt during the interview. Perhaps it is related to the environment she grew up in, which included her parents’ untimely divorce, her mother’s new marriage and family, her lack of received care, and the absence of playmates during her childhood. All of these factors seem to have imprinted deeply into her mind and body, to the point where she does not seem capable of smoothly integrating into society.
When it comes to hobbies, she seems to have very few. More often than not, she is a person in a daze. I don’t know how she got in touch with this world, but I am curious if the life she sees through her microscope has more life to it than the actual outside world.”
Lu Ning narrowed her eyes and read it twice, before finally gritting her teeth and deleting the entire paragraph.
“Cheng Jingbo, you crazy bastard. I hate you to death,” she whispered fiercely.
Later that day, Lu Ning complained to Xue Ling about the incident. Xue Ling turned to her and said, “Ning Ning, if you look at it from Cheng Jingbo’s point of view, he has the responsibility to protect his girlfriend. Don’t think too much about it and learn to be smarter in the future. Don’t offend him.”
Her cousin’s advice was both tactful and subtle, leaving Lu Ning speechless. She felt oddly treated as if she had suffered a loss.

Of course, Bo Ziren would never find out about all these behind-the-scenes events with all their twists and turns. Completing her mentor’s task had left her relieved and she was now uninterested in the outcome of the interview.
She had spent the past few days at home helping to take care of your brothers, and especially Mu Zidong who had not stopped causing trouble. He was turning out to be a difficult, little guy to deal with.
Many times, he was seen running around the house with his toy sword raised high above his head. He almost bumped into Bo Ziren head-on as he’d aggressively careened up the stairs.
Mu Zibei on the other hand was much more relaxed. He’d been going to the training center three to four times a week, and after coming back home, would usually stay in his room reading. As long as he had food and something to drink, he stayed quiet and rarely made a fuss. Occasionally he would amble over to Bo Ziren to pester her about the invisible, future brother-in-law. Bo Ziren continued to tell him that she did not have a boyfriend yet, and Mu Zibei would shake his head in disbelief.
Bo Ziren found herself without much private time to enjoy. It was only after dinner, when her four family members went for a walk, that she found a short and peaceful period in which to read from the books Cheng Jingbo had recommended to her.
One day, after Uncle Mu had taken Mu Zibei to the training center, and Liu Xinyu had gone grocery shopping, Bo Ziren was left to watch Mu Zidong on her own. After he woke up from his nap, he began to stir up trouble again. The minute her back was turned, Mu Zidong swung his sword and crashed it into a vase. The porcelain pieces rained down on him, and one sharp edge slashed him across the forehead.
Bo Ziren ran to the medicine box and began rummaging around for gauze and anti-inflammatory powder to help stop the bleeding, as Mu Zidong sobbed beside her. His cries got louder and louder until Bo Ziren found it too much to cope with and decided to take him to the nearest hospital instead. Mu Zidong wailed that he was about to die from the pain as she bundled him out the door.
After they hailed a taxi, she called her mother and Uncle Mu to tell them what had happened.
Liu Xinyu wailed that she’d lost her soul, while Uncle Mu calmly comforted Bo Ziren, telling her it would all be alright and that they would get there as soon as they could.
Mu Zidong ended up needing a stitch, followed by a bandage covering his forehead. His eyes still shined from unshed tears, and when Liu Xinyu arrived, she felt her heart split when she saw her beloved baby in such a state. She rushed over to him, hugging him fiercely, almost crying herself.
“Mom, my sword is broken. I want to buy a new one,” said Mu Zidong, taking advantage of the situation.
“You look like this, yet you’re already asking for new toys?” Liu Xinyu sniffed as she carefully looked at his face. “Is it still painful? Show mommy how your face looks.”
“No more pain. I want a new sword.”
“You silly child. You don’t feel hurt anymore, but your mother is in pain.”
Bo Ziren stood quietly to the side watching the mother and son.
After a while, Liu Xinyu finally focused her attention on Bo Ziren. She opened her mouth to comment, but even she was surprised at what she ended up saying.
“I can’t go out for a minute without something happening. Look what your brother has suffered from. Seems like I can only rely on myself. When it comes to babysitting, none of you care.”
The light in Bo Ziren’s eyes dimmed, and her shoulders suddenly felt immensely heavy.
Fifteen minutes later, Uncle Mu and Mu Zibei finally arrived to take them home. On the way back, Mu Zidong seemed to have already forgotten about the pain and was talking animatedly with Mu Zibei. Liu Xinyu sat silently, gently stroking the heads of her two little treasures.
When they stopped at a red light, Uncle Mu began to berate his son but was immediately interrupted by Liu Xinyu.
“He’s already had to undergo this pain, do you really have the heart to scold him? A child can’t avoid getting into trouble. Is he worth less than the vase?
Uncle Mu frowned.
“I’m not feeling sorry for my vase. I’m warning him against using his sword to break things and hurt himself again in the future.”
“As long as I’m watching him, he will be fine,” Liu Xinyu answered coldly. “It’s mainly because I wasn’t there. If you want to say something, say it to me instead.”
Uncle Mu stole a glance at Bo Ziren sitting next to him. Feeling slightly guilty and embarrassed, he wiped at his face with his hand and narrowed his eyes tiredly as he guided the car under the twilight.
