Let Me Meet Your Family
💖
He didn’t ask her why she ran to to the car alone. The moment she’d spoken to him, he’d heard her unease, even though she tried to hide it.
Bo Ziren hadn’t waited for long for Cheng Jingbo to arrive. After she got into the car, she said to him, “My uncle brought me here for dinner. Apparently, was to introduce me to someone.”
Cheng Jingbo thought for a moment before asking, “So you didn’t finish your meal?”
“Yeah, how did you know?”
“With your personality, you wouldn’t be able to just sit there and deal with that situation.”
Bo Ziren rubbed her nose in embarrassment. “Yeah, I can’t keep quiet, so I just said the truth.”
“What did you say?”
“I said I already have a boyfriend.”
He actually smiled for a split second upon hearing that, before his expression turned serious. He took her hand in his, resting it in his lap.
“Take me to meet your family one day.”
Bo Ziren was surprised. “You want to meet them?”
“Yes, let them meet your boyfriend. Once they feel at ease, they won’t arrange such things for you.”
“Isn’t this too fast?”
“Although it’s a little fast, it’s a good time to do it.”
The unease in her heart suddenly disappeared.
His words meant that he was certain of her.
She didn’t quite understand how, but every time she felt uneasy, seeing him always made every negative feeling go away. He always seemed to have a way of resolving these bewildering conflicts, and making it so she never had to worry.
“Why aren’t you saying anything? Are you thinking that I might not see them?” He was half serious and half joking.
“Of course not, I just feel…happy,” she spoke the last word very softly.
“What?” He didn’t hear her clearly.
“I’m very happy to have you by my side,” she said, speaking up.
His eyes flashed with slight astonishment, and then he clenched her hand tightly.
“Not bad. Your progress is very fast. This sentence has a lot of love.”
Love words?
She was just telling the truth and hadn’t had any intention of trying to please him, however, she could see that he was now in a very good mood, so she decided not to clarify.
While they waited at a red light, he opened the glove box, brought out a small bar of chocolate, unwrapped it, and brought it up to her lips.
She took a bite.
“It’s very sweet.”
“Really?”
He withdrew his hand and bit from the spot where she had bitten.
“It’s indeed sweet,” he said slowly.
He offered it back to her, “Take another bite.”
She complied.
He gently wiped the corner of her mouth with his finger before bringing his attention back to the steering wheel.
At the next red light came, he opened the drawer again and brought out another chocolate bar. He seemed to have found this game interesting.
It wasn’t long before Bo Ziren’s palm held a total of five pieces of gold foil, shining brightly in the warm sunlight.
She snuck a look at his hand. His normally clean fingers had become stained with chocolate, as well as some of her saliva, but he didn’t seem to mind at all and hadn’t made a move to wipe it off.
“I remember something,” he said suddenly.
“What?”
“When I was in primary school, I raised a turtle. I would feed it every day. In the end, it was so heavy that it couldn’t crawl. It even needed my help to turn itself. It was a very interesting experience.”
“You…do you think I’m a turtle?”
“No.” He seemed to be deep in thought, his eyes filled with anticipation, “It was really interesting to discover my feeding talent today. I just don’t know what the final results will be.”
Bo Ziren’s eyes twitched and an image flashed through her mind of herself unable to turn over like his turtle. She really didn’t want to get fat.
They drove to the hospital to visit Wu Wei and coincidentally, Xue Ling was in the room reading a newspaper to her husband.
When Xue Ling saw them, she put down the newspaper and smiled kindly.
“Welcome, it’s nice to see you. Sit down. I’ll peel some fruit.”
Wu Wei’s recovery was going well. He had gained some weight and his eyes had gotten brighter.
“Congratulations on your formal withdrawal,” he teased.
Cheng Jingbo thanked him.
“You said you don’t like beautiful girls.”
“I just said I don’t like girls who are too beautiful.”
“Are you implying that she’s not that pretty?”
“She’s just right in my eyes. She looks very pleasing to me.”
Cheng Jingbo’s answer was simple, but it meant something to her. Too beautiful meant that a girl was a poster for the public to appreciate. What was suitable for him, and what he liked, was a private collection.
Wu Wei’s fighting spirit had become ignited though, and he continued to argue with him.
“But she might be too beautiful in the eyes of many people. You have to watch carefully, or else someone will snatch her away.”
Cheng Jingbo smiled. “The probability is so low, it’s not worth being vigilant over.”
Just as Wu Wei was about to respond, Cheng Jingbo added, “But thank you for reminding me. I know you’ve learned a lot about this.”
He secretly pointed to the time when Wu Wei had just met Xue Ling. He’d fallen in love at first sight and had become obsessed to the extreme. He had often been worried that his treasure would be snatched away. When Xue Ling would go to a neighboring city for a business trip, he would drive over to deliver a late-night snack. He became the laughing stock of everyone and Xue Ling’s sisters jokingly called Wu Wei a night-car addict.
Xue Ling also recalled this and patted her husband’s hand. “Do you think all men are as un-confident as you? Do you think that most people can compare to Cheng Jingbo?”
Wu Wei smiled and turned to look at Bo Ziren.
“My wife is right. Back then, he and another man named Zhou Xiaran were the two male gods in the eyes of men, women, boys, and girls.
Bo Ziren’s ears had perked up at the name Zhou Xiaran.
Could it be the same person?
Wu Wei continued, “But he was stupid and was always rejecting people very quickly. Unlike Zhou Xiaran who was elegant and courteous and never rejected anyone. Even the female teachers of the specialized courses secretly approved of him.
“Later on in a competition of strength, a foolish female teacher thought of a way to give a competitive position unfairly to Zhou Xiaran, even though he didn’t deserve it.”
Cheng Jingbo spoke, his tone normal, “Everyone is different and everyone has their own strengths, but losing is losing. There’s no excuse.”
This was the first time Xue Ling had heard this story and asked curiously, “Where is Zhou Xiaran now?”
Wu Wei shook his head. “He changed his career a long time ago. He’s not someone who can academia life for long. Where he’s at, he’s probably earned a few lifetimes of money by now.”
“What a pity.”
“Everyone has their own aspirations. It’s good for someone with his personality to leave the academic world. Otherwise, the water in the industry would be messed up.”
The couple continued talking, seemingly forgetting about their guests.
Then they suddenly turned the topic back to Bo Ziren.
