The Fifty-Third Night (1)
Because Feng Jing’s movement was too subtle, Jiang Ran wasn’t sure if she was seeing things or he had actually moved. She stared at the man lying on the bed intently, calling out anxiously, “Feng Jing?”
As if in response, Feng Jing’s eyelashes trembled again. This time Jiang Ran saw it very clearly.
At once, her eyes were wide with happiness and she turned to ask Xiao Linlin and her mother to make sure it wasn’t only her who was seeing it happen. “He moved his eyes just now, did you see it?!”
“Yes, they seemed to have moved,” said Xiao Linlin’s mother.
“I will call the doctor!” Just as Jiang Ran’s voice fell, she pressed the pager.
The doctor and nurse came over quickly, Jiang Ran described how Feng Jing had responded just then. Dr. Ji immediately asked them to wait outside the ward.
Every minute and every second passed outside the ward was very painful. Jiang Ran kept praying in her heart, hoping that Feng Jing would wake up.
When the door of the ward opened again, Jiang Ran was the first to go up and ask, “Doctor Ji, how is he now? Is he awake?”
“He woke up just then and his consciousness was very clear. But because his body is still too weak, soon after he woke up, he fell asleep once again. Don’t worry, since he’s already woken up once, he should be fine now.” Dr. Ji reassured.
“Okay, thank you Dr. Ji!” Upon expressing her gratitude, Jiang Ran went on to inform Feng Jing’s mother of the news.
Mrs. Feng was still in the garden. She glanced at the little sand-colored dog that was sleeping in the sun and said to Jiang Ran, who was clearly jubilant on the other side of the phone…
- “Got it, I’ll head to the hospital now.”
Feng Jing waking up was a big event. Even Feng Ya, whose legs had yet to recover, accompanied her mother to the hospital. However, since Dr. Ji had said that Feng Jing’s body was still weak, they didn’t inform other people and proceeded to wait in the hospital for the fellow to regain consciousness.
Dr. Ji had said that he should be able to wake up in the afternoon.
Jiang Ran had been staying in the hospital for the past few days, so Mrs. Feng asked her to go back to rest. However, she still insisted on staying. Seeing her reluctance, Mrs. Feng advised her, “Look at yourself, you’ve got dark circles under your eyes. Go back, take a bath, apply some hydrating face masks, change your clothes and then come back.”
Jiang Ran was finally persuaded. “I’ll go back to change my clothes first. If Feng Jing wakes up, please make sure to call me.”
“Relax, don’t worry, and go.”
Feng Ya quietly gave her mother a thumbs up. “Good job!”
Mrs. Feng accepted the compliment in great gusto.
By the time Jiang Ran had returned home, it was already time for lunch, so she ate at home. Er Huang was still asleep. It seemed he got tired after playing in the gardens all morning, so Jiang Ran didn’t bother him, and let him be. She filled the bathtub with hot water, put on a facial mask, and soaked in it comfortably.
Over the past few days, her constant worry for Feng Jing had disrupted her sleep. Also she hadn’t applied face masks in a really long while. Her complexion had obviously waned as compared to before, so she hoped that pampering her skin now would help.
The warm water relieved her physical fatigue and also helped relax her nerves, and it wasn’t long before she fell asleep. Twenty minutes later, she was woken up by the alarm she had set on her phone.
Dismissing it, she peeled the mask off her face and took a look in the mirror. Ah, her complexion did seem a lot better than before. She applied some light makeup before leaving for the hospital once more.
After everything was settled, she received a phone call from Mrs. Feng. Jiang Ran almost flew over to pick up the phone, “Auntie, is Feng Jing awake?”
- “Yes, he is awake, you can come over now.”
“Ok!”
It was Uncle Zhou who was driving her to and from the hospital during this period. So Jiang Ran trotted down the stairs and called out, “Uncle Zhou, Feng Jing is awake, let’s go to the hospital!”
“Okay, I’ll get the car ready.”
This time, en route to the hospital, Jiang Ran was more relaxed than ever. Uncle Zhou watched her jumping with joy, and he felt himself echoing mutual joy.
Who knew where those well-informed, distinguished members of the media got the information from? At this moment, a lot of people were gathered outside of the hospital. If Jiang Ran had come a little later, it would have been like the day of Feng Jing’s accident, the road near the hospital would have had traffic congestion again.
“These paparazzi sure have good noses (to sniff out confidential information so well).” Uncle Zhou could not help muttering.
Jiang Ran also didn’t like these reporters. Through the car window, she looked at those people who were holding cameras and microphones and asked Uncle Zhou, “They won’t chase us, right?”
“They cannot. I have seen President Feng’s bodyguards. Generally, these reporters dare not provoke him.”1He means Feng Ping
Jiang Ran strongly agreed with Uncle Zhou’s words because President Feng oozed a perpetual aura of “Don’t mess with me lest you wanna die”.
Entering the hospital smoothly, as usual, Jiang Ran began to trot. Feng Jing’s ward was in the VIP area and the floor was relatively high. She watched the rising numbers of the elevator, her heartbeat jumping faster and faster.
Before stepping out of the elevator, she took a small mirror out of her bag to check her appearance once more before proceeding to walk out of the elevator.
She felt that her legs were a little weak.
“Hoo–” She took a deep breath, trying to calm her beating heart.
