A Premeditated Action
It was as if some thoughts that had been hidden in her mind for a long time, had finally come to the surface.
It was as if some emotions that had been hidden in her heart for the past two years had suddenly been released.
She began to recall many different things now, such as Ye Ling’s frown and focused gaze every time he solved a technical problem, the faint smile on his lips every time she handed him a lunchbox, or how she had deliberately ignored the “useless gifts” he’d thrown at her that he claimed to have received from friends abroad – all of which were women’s items.
She thought about the way he looked at her every time, quietly, but reassuringly.
Right before Tian Tian hung up the phone – with the corners of her mouth curved up – she vaguely heard a voice on the end of the line give a low, familiar chuckle, but she paid it no mind.
Later in the evening, she went through almost her entire wardrobe to find an appropriate outfit. Tomorrow was her first date! With someone she…liked.
Yes, someone I’d always liked, I guess.
It was just that he was ruled by his cold-bloodedness and restrained to the point where he had no confidence.
She tossed and turned till late at night before finally waking up at nine in the morning. When she picked up her phone, she found a text message.
[Ye Ling: Today is important, I will contact you again.]
A simple sentence, but one could feel his rare anxiety. Tian Tian wanted to call, but she wasn’t sure how it would affect him. She could only be patient and wait until she saw him later.
When Tian Tian stepped into the office that morning, she instantly detected an eerie and tense atmosphere. A few colleagues’ faces appeared a bit stiff, and two people who looked somewhat familiar to her were standing in the middle of the office. When they saw Tian Tian, they hurried towards her.
“Tian Tian?” One of them ascertained coldly, “Come with us.”
“Who are you?”
“The Audit and Inspection Department.”
Sitting in the conference room of the Audit and Inspection Department, Tian Tian Tian could not believe what she was now hearing.
This department was directly under the board of directors and was set up to monitor the risk and compliance of all departments so as to protect the company’s capital and reputation.
Tian Tian was in the R&D department and rarely dealt with them.
However, according to colleagues from the Finance and Sales Departments, the Audit and Supervision Department was the investigation arm of the company. They didn’t understand technology so they had naturally not come to Tian Tian for information.
“So…you know nothing about the leak of technical information on the K57 project?” A middle-aged woman asked coldly.
Tian Tian shook her head. “You can monitor my computer records, I have never leaked it.”
“But the complete information of this project was only handled by Manager Ye and his two assistants. Now our competitors have been the first to launch a product similar to K57 and the company has lost tens of millions,” the woman said. “Of these three people, you are the most suspicious.”
“Why!?” Tian Tian asked, furious.
“Manager Ye is the company’s chief technical officer, and the technical projects he brought to the company back then far exceeded the value of this leak – meaning he didn’t have to do it. Assistant Lin is a veteran who has worked for the company for over seven years and has a master’s degree from a prestigious foreign school. But you…”
She was implying that Tian Tian, who had only worked for two years and had beaten many of her rivals when she’d first joined the company, was the most suspicious. The company’s main goal was to provide the best possible service to its customers.
“In the meantime, all your work is suspended,” the woman continued. “We will ask the public security authorities to interrogate you further.” She paused. “Little girl, you’d better tell the truth before it gets ugly with them.”
Just as the words left her mouth, the door was pushed open and two public security officers with big hats walked in. They shook hands enthusiastically with the woman, who turned out to be Manager Yuan of the Audit and Inspection Department.
One of the public security officers looked at Tian Tian.
“This is the suspect? Girl, come with us to assist in the investigation.”
Tian Tian stood up, her voice strong. “Officer, I am not a suspect.”
Just as Manager Yuan’s face began to turn ugly, the door to the conference room was pushed open once again, but this time with a violent force.
Everyone in the room froze.
Ye Ling stalked in with the president of Gu Yan following behind him.
“What’s going on?” Ye Ling frowned as he walked over to Tian Tian and looked at Manager Yuan.
“The K57 project leak incident was reported to the president by my department yesterday.” Manager Yuan’s tone slowed down a bit. “Tian Tian is your assistant, she must assist in the investigation.”
“Come with us girl.” The public security officer said.
“You’re taking her to the Public Security Bureau?” Gu Yan, who was behind Ye Ling, asked, somewhat incredulously.
“She’s not going.” Ye Ling said coldly.
The public security officer was surprised and looked at Gu Yan. “Mr. Gu, although it is a family matter for your group, it is also an economic case. All the people involved have to be questioned and investigated.”
“She is not suspected of this.” Ye Ling said adamantly, “You guys can investigate the others.”
Manager Yuan quipped, “Manager Ye, that’s too absolute.”
“It’s not absolute. I know her,” Ye Ling said lightly, “She is very innocent.”
Tian Tian was touched, but she was not afraid of being investigated, and was about to speak up when she heard Manager Yuan say, “Manager Ye, although she is your assistant, knowing people is–”
“She is my girlfriend.” Ye Ling’s tone was calm, “Do I not know her?”
The crowd went silent.
Girlfriend…girlfriend of the cold-blooded, workaholic, R&D manager?!
They were completely unprepared for such powerful gossip to break out. Tian Tian’s face burned for a moment – but more was yet to come.
Gu Yan saw that Minister Yuan still wanted to argue her case, so he walked up and patted Ye Ling’s shoulder, laughing, “Anyone could be a commercial spy, but not Tian Tian.”
“President…why?” Yuan asked.
Gu Yan turned his head to the public security, “I have all her information in my office, clear as day. How could my family betray Gu?”
He smiled slowly, turning to Ye Ling, “Isn’t that right…brother?”
The K57 espionage case was the biggest economic case in Gu’s ten-year history, and the accusation against Tian Tian had made her feel faint. Not to mention the gossip that was now erupting about the relationship between the R&D junior assistant and the R&D manager. But the most unbelievable fact that caused a gossip explosion, was that the R&D manager was the president’s brother.
If not for the bloodline, then why would someone with a high school diploma from the US return to a domestic group?
The gossip mill slowly dug deeper and deeper by those most interested until they discovered that when Master Gu and his first wife had divorced, they had each kept one son. The youngest was taken abroad and had only returned to China a couple of years back.
Since the youngest son was very tech-savvy by nature, it was decided that he would simply conceal his identity as a Gu for the time being, in order to avoid unnecessary trouble with his work.
The day that Gu Yan revealed that Gu Ling was in fact Ye Ling’s true identity, was as it turned out, a premeditated action.
