Transmigration
In a dark hospital room, the light of a cell phone’s screen shone dimly through the quilt. Zhong Youyou’s head was buried under the quilt, her eyes staring intently at the string of numbers in her bank account. She was stunned silly. She kept refreshing the page and counting the digits over and over. The girl’s mouth had long since turned dry.
One, two, three… eight! That’s eight digits!
90 million!!
She wondered if she turned crazy. Perhaps she was hallucinating? This was an amount of money she could not accumulate in her entire lifetime even if she participated in physics competitions until her death! She laid her hands over her furiously beating heart—it was drumming with excitement!
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and held her phone firmly. She started counting the digits again, afraid they would suddenly disappear…. But they didn’t!
She wanted to scream on the top of her lungs!
It seems that the enormous sum of money that the Zhong family compensated the female supporting lead with had not yet been wiped out!!
This whole thing had come as an unbelievable surprise to Zhang Youyou. In fact, only god knew how incredible she felt after transmigrating.
A little over an hour ago, she had finished reading the novel “Holding the Wrong One.” Then, she found herself thrown into the world of the very book, taking over the body of the very supporting lead she despised. What’s more, they even had the same name!
However, she still wanted to complain about this infuriating read! There would always be this one book that made you want to bang your head on a wall while reading, yet you would be addicted, unable to bring yourself to put it down all night. And this was precisely one such book!
The premise of the story was a little cooked but exciting nevertheless. Ten years ago, a nanny named Meng Qian and Miss Zhon Jiazhong both gave birth to two daughters on the same day, in the same hospital and ward. Meng Qian had been living hand to mouth, and could be considered on the poorer side of society. One day, she met the Zhong family. Only then did she know what it truly meant to be rich. It was the type of life she could not begin to imagine. The Eldest Miss’ fingers were soft and slender, with a healthy luster. On the other hand, hers were rough and calloused. While the other had neatly trimmed nails adorned with a beautiful colour, hers were ugly with blackened creased grooves.
And so, that day, she developed a devious plan. Upon noticing their lavish lifestyle, she didn’t want her daughter to experience a poverty-stricken life anymore, and decided to switch the two new-borns. She had already suffered in her daughter’s stead, the little girl didn’t have to follow in her footsteps!
Since that day, the identities of the two girls were swapped. Zhong Youyou fell from her rightful grace, and Meng Shixuan turned into a blazing phoenix. She had a loving family. A pair of gentle grandparents, loving parents who didn’t shy from spoiling her rotten, and a younger brother who was out to protect her from a young age.
She learned the piano, ballet, participated in many international competitions, and all kinds of cultural and artistic performances. There was hardly anyone who wasn’t envious of this talented girl, whose brilliance overshadowed many. She was like a bright moon hung up in the sky, hard to reach, and even harder to ignore. Being pampered all her life, she developed a soft personality. She couldn’t even bring herself to step on a little ant. So much so, that when she saw one loitering on the ground, she would take care not to squish it by accident.
Meanwhile, Zhong Youyou followed Nanny Meng Qian. What she tried to avoid was getting involved in her alcoholic father’s debts at all costs.
At first glance, the girl’s appearance was akin to that of a beggar. Her hair was a tangled mess since she hadn’t brushed it for many years, and her face was covered with grime and filth. Her hands would dangle to her side, her nails severely overgrown with dirt underneath.
At one point, the people in their neighborhood took pity on this young girl and helped send her to school. It wasn’t until nine years of compulsory education did life seem to improve a little. When she was 13, she had her first period, and at the time, no one had taught her how to use sanitary pads. Thankfully, a female teacher noticed her plight and brought her some out of pity, not forgetting to teach her how to use them. But again, Zhong Youyou was the supporting lead, so these things were mentioned very briefly in the novel. Only the most necessary parts were mentioned; the ones that would make her descend into depravity and her extremely paranoid and vicious behavior not feel forced.
Zhong Youyou—who shared the same name and surname with the little girl—felt for her. She found herself seething in anger the more she read. What the hell was this! If it were her in the supporting role’s shoes, she would have turned rotten too, no doubt about it!
There was a part in the story where the two girls first met. At that time, the author described how the difference between them was that of clouds to mud.
Meng Shixuan invited Zhong Youyou to a meal at a high-class restaurant. She ordered two steaks—one for her, one for Zhony Youyou. Meng Shixuan held her fork and knife in a practiced manner and ate with refined elegance. On the other hand, Zhong Youyou fumbled her way through the meat and couldn’t hold her utensils correctly. They fell to the ground one too many times. In the end, she accidently knocked the plate onto the ground, and the meat fell, smearing the ground with steak sauce. That day, she was pointed and laughed at incessantly. Later on, when it was revealed that she was the rightful daughter of the Zhong family, she thought that their standing would finally shift.
Since the day she learnt of the truth, she had always imagined how her long-awaited reunion with her family would go: Their happy, joyful expressions as they took her in their arms. Alas, reality was often disappointing. She was alienated and ignored by everyone. Her family—those of her blood— be it her father, mother, or brother, they all still treated Meng Shixuan better. In the end, she was the outsider. She couldn’t touch anything in the house without a slap on the wrist. The pretty dolls of Meng Shixuan in her childhood days, or the pretty clothes that she got to wear; everything was hers, and all that was hers was off-limits….
Nothing seemed to have changed, and she found that she couldn’t fit in at all.
“We haven’t cleaned up your room yet, so you’ll be staying in the guest room for now.”
“Take off your shoes before stepping inside. And wipe off that mud on your trousers, too.
“Can you stop being noisy when you eat?”
“What? You also like Shi Zhitang? Although it’s true that the two families had an engagement agreement before your birth, Meng Shixuan is also considered the Zhong family’s daughter. Besides, Shi Zhitang and her are childhood sweethearts and have a deep relationship, so can’t you be sensible and give him up to your sister? It’s not like he likes you back.”
All these events led her to feel envious of Meng Shixuan, and at one point, she started targeting her and did many things that fit her role in the story.
One of the many things she did was that she once pushed the fair Meng Shixuan deliberately to the ground, shattering her beloved mug into pieces. However, unbeknownst to her, all this did was further deepen the rift with her family, pushing her farther away. Her little ploys stemming from envy only lead her family to shower Meng Shixuan with tenderness.
Many of the readers hated Zhong Youyou and found her quite annoying, and that was understandable since the story was narrated from a first person’s perspective—the female lead’s perspective. Naturally, that led to the reader projecting themselves in her stead, experiencing what the protagonist experienced.
However, when it came to her, whether that be because they shared the same name or not, she found herself seething with anger over the supporting role’s choices in the story. This family clearly doesn’t care about you, so why are you still so hell-bent on them? Isn’t it cool enough to be rich, beautiful, and live life the way you want? Why do you even bother with them still?! She would always scream internally when reading.
But no, she decided to fall into a spiral of attention-seeking. She took drugs, went out to bars, stayed out late at night, and wore flamboyant make-up. She wanted to upset them, for if they were, it meant they at least cared. However, she only highlighted how obedient and good Meng Shixuan was in the process.
Her days in her new supposed home turned her extremely narrow-minded. She could scoff at an iron piece for not being blessed enough to turn into steel. As a result, the day she received the news that her father had left ninety-percent of his inheritance to Meng Shixuan and her siblings, she spat out a mouthful of blood. This was not proverbial by any means.
When she read up to this point, she lost interest in the story and wanted to put it to the side. After all, what good could there be for the supporting role when she went head to head with the heroine. The final portion of the story must have been about the supporting role getting abused and what not.
She impatiently started flipping through the remaining part in a hurry just for the sake of calling it finished. And, what a surprise…. The supporting lead lost her entire assets and started wandering the streets in a trance like a dog who had lost its owner, and in the end, the beautiful and forgiving heroine extended her hand out for her in a charitable manner.
“——”
Zhong Youyou was left speechless.
She wanted to curse the nanny—the reason this novel even existed— and her best friend who had sent her the link to buy the book. She really had to go and recommend this infuriating thing! If you like getting abused, don’t drag other people into it…!
She had stayed up all night in order to finish this novel, and it was only when it was five in the morning did she finally wrap it up. She was so exhausted that she laid her head on the pillow and fell into a deep sleep quickly.
However, who would have thought that she would find herself inside the novel when she woke up…If she hadn’t reaffirmed that the 90 million the supporting lead had received were still well and safe in her bank account, she would have smashed her head on the ward’s door in the hope of going back home. She didn’t want to be in the supporting role’s shoes at all! What awaited was a life of toiling away, and a family that didn’t care about her whatsoever. Her parents didn’t even love her!
Truth be told, the Zhong family were rich, filthy rich. A level of wealth that ordinary people could not even imagine. Just the villa they resided was worth 90 million, and the 90 million in Zhong Youyou’s possession were given to her by her father merely out of guilt when she was brought back to the family. At that time, Zhong Youyou had yet to turn rotten and she was still suffering from an inferiority complex.
But Zhong Youyou knew that in the next half year, the money would be all gone. Spent on abortions, gambling, alcohol and drugs. A lot of things would happen in conjunction in the coming six months. The supporting lead would fall deeper into depravity, try and force the heroine and her fiancé apart, and break off their engagement. Naturally, this didn’t sit well with her parents who were quick to kick her out of the house to live on her own.
After moving out, she was assaulted by a robber, which led her to plunge deeper into the abyss, never to climb back again. This further increased the Zhong family’s revulsion towards her. She was apparently their daughter, yet she was useless in every way and ruined the reputation of their family again and again.
In the end, she grew to hate her entire family and not just Meng Shixuan. From that point forward, she started plotting evil.
The day of the heroine’s wedding, which was in six months, would be the day when the countdown for the supporting lead’s miserable fate would be set in motion.
And yet, here she was….
