The Seventy-Eighth Night (2)
From within the darkness, another body of light emerged. Feng Jing waited for it to approach him slowly, before realising that it was another person – one who looked exactly like him.
The other man was wearing the same pajamas as him; standing across from him it seemed as if he1Feng Jing was looking into a mirror.
“Who are you?”
It was Feng Jing who broke the silence in the end.
The other smiled at him and said, “I am Er Huang.”
Feng Jing: “——”
It took a long moment for Feng Jing to accept this “Er Huang” with the same voice as himself.
“What is going on?” he asked.
“This is just one of your dreams.”
“——” He pursed his lips. “So you’re giving me this dream?” he asked again.
“You could think of it that way.”
Feng Jing, who had been through many storms, acclimated quickly. “Do you know why we exchanged souls?”
Er Huang replied, “I asked them to.”
“Them?”
The other did not answer who the ‘them’ were, but continued, “I was hit by a car and Jiang Ran saved me. I was seriously injured, so although I survived, the doctor said that my organs may gradually cease to function. I wanted to find someone to accompany her in my stead when I left. He Zhiyuan was suitable, but she did not like him, so I had to look for someone else.”
As Feng Jing digested the story, he asked, “How did you find me? We don’t seem to know each other?”
“You are a big celebrity, aren’t you? I’ve seen you on TV. Ran Ran liked a celebrity before and had his poster in the study2In Chapter 5, there is a mention of Mo Zhen’s poster pasted on the side of her bookcase. Link. When I asked about the star, I discovered he was already married, so I thought of finding another celebrity for her. Just then, your film was on… I thought you were good-looking and barely worthy of her. “
Feng Jing: “——”
I don’t care if you mock me, but why are you calling her Ran Ran as if you are that close!
He concluded that Er Huang was much cuter as a dog.
“Now you two are married, and my mission is complete. I hope you treat her well. She is a very good girl.”
Feng Jing frowned, apparently having a bad feeling. “Are you leaving?”
“Mn.” Er Huang made an affirmative noise.
Then, their surroundings slowly illuminated. The sudden white light tore through the darkness, and Feng Jing closed his eyes instinctively. When he opened them again, the morning sun from outside his window shone upon his face.
He glanced at the curtains and sat up.
Jiang Ran lay beside him, sleeping soundly. Trying not to wake her up, he quietly slipped on his slippers, opened the bedroom door, and went downstairs. Er Huang was still lying in his nest, just like last night.
“Er Huang?” Feng Jing walked over, crouched, and touched his head.
There was no response.
Feng Jing’s eyes gradually dimmed. He noticed that Er Huang wasn’t breathing, nor did he have a pulse.
“Feng Jing?” Jiang Ran walked down the stairs by now. “What happened to Er Huang?”
He turned to look at her, not knowing how to explain.
Seeing the gloom on her husband’s face, Jiang Ran’s heart skipped a beat. “What’s wrong?” she asked. Then she walked over and called “Er Huang” as usual.
However, the dog just lay there, his eyelids did not even stir.
She knelt down, her voice already heavy with tears as she said, “Er Huang, it’s time to get up.”
Feng Jing held her in his arms and stroked her hair comfortingly. Tears filled her eyes as she looked back at him. “Feng Jing, what happened to Er Huang? Is he sick?”
His lips were pursed in a straight line, there was no way he could tell her such cruel news.
“Er Huang.” Jiang Ran’s tears rolled down one by one, falling to the floor. She was so desolate that it ached him to watch her so.
Feng Jing gently wiped away the tears on her face, and said softly, “Actually, I had a dream last night.”
She sniffled, turned to look at him, and said, “What…what dream?”
“I dreamt of Er Huang,” Feng Jing said. “He said he was a prince from Planet B603. When he was collecting data on Earth, he was accidentally knocked down by a car. Fortunately, you saved him. Now that his mission is completed, he’s going to return to his own planet.”
Jiang Ran looked at the man, eyes wide open, tears still clinging to the corners, and said, “Really, really?”
Feng Jing nodded earnestly. “Well, he also used the technology of their alien planet to allow our souls to swap. He asked me to tell you…If you miss him just look up at the stars, he is on one of them.”
Jiang Ran simply watched him for a few moments, then threw herself in his arms and cried her heart out.
The news of Er Huang’s departure made many people sad. Although Yan Huanhuan often mocked Jiang Ran’s penchant for posting pictures of the dog on her Moments, she was sad for a long time upon learning the news too.
They found the relevant personnel to cremate Er Huang, but Jiang Ran kept some things left behind.
In the evening, when Feng Jing went upstairs to find her, he saw her standing alone on the balcony, looking up at the night sky.
A thin coat fell over her shoulders before a mellow voice wafted into her ears…
“It’s chilly at night, don’t catch a cold.”
Jiang Ran turned to look at the man, then smiled at him with an “en“.
He leaned on the window ledge and looked up at the stars with her.
The current environment of City A was not comparable to that of ten or twenty years ago. It had been a long time since they had witnessed such a clear night sky.
“We can still see the stars today,” Jiang Ran remarked. “Say, where is the planet B603?”
“I don’t know, it is probably the brightest one.”
The two remained silent for a while before Jiang Ran looked at Feng Jing by her side and said, “In fact, the doctor told me a long time ago that Er Huang might not live long. He was badly injured in the car accident at the time.”
Feng Jing’s eyes moved slightly, taken aback.
With eyes as bright as the stars above them, she smiled, “However, I like the story you told me.”
He couldn’t help bending down and kissing her lips gently. “I will be by your side hereon. Forever.”
